The best way to plant poppy seeds, is a little at a time every day, or every other day, over a period of a few days/weeks. We always send a nice packet of poppy seeds which contains a good amount of FREE extras in it! Try spacing out your plantings of them, in little pinches here and there! This is the smarter way to grow them, because mother nature can sometimes be cruel and send bad weather, and when you are first learning to grow poppy seeds it pays to save a good bit back for future experiments, and/or emergencies! They do not need to be buried, that kills them. They must have light to grow! Just barely lightly sprinkled and pressed gently, (NOT covered at all), into moistened soil, also do not use a hose which will wash them away, instead, use a soaker, or dripper type of watering system, to keep the soil well-drained, but evenly moist. Even a $1.00 Mister Water Spray Bottle works great! All our customers that have got these seeds from us, have all been having fast sprouts within 48 to 72 hours for a few to start popping up, and with most all of them fully germinated and sprouted within 2 weeks. Beware of predators! Ants LOVE to eat them, so sprinkle some organic ant killer out, also, birds love to eat them, so maybe screen the area over a little at first. Rodents will eat them too, and also, even once they get going, for the first few weeks, be sure to sprinkle some "SLUGGO BRAND" Organic slug killer out, because slugs will devour whole plants overnight, if they are under 2 feet! Other than that, there aren't to many enemies of them I can think of. Good luck with your poppy experience, and remember, please, just be patient, and try ONLY a few small pinches at a time, then a few more right nearby. This also will give you a nice long continuous show! Poppy Flowers are very quick, and it always better to have a bunch planted one batch right after the other for more longer lasting "staggered flower bloom time"! Once you get them going good, be sure to thin them back after a few weeks, so that you can have big giant flowers all over a few plants, rather than leggy thin weak plants that all only have one flower.
